One in Seven Strokes Strikes During Sleep
Emergency room records from two US states show that, in 2005, about 15 percent of strokes took place while patients were sleeping. This is problematic because tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), a clot-dissolving enzyme, is only administered within hours of the onset of stroke symptoms. Sleeping stroke victims do not know when their strokes began, and so they cannot receive the drug if they were asleep for more than four and a half hours before awakening with symptoms. It is therefore important to try to find a way to estimate when wake-up strokes actually occurred, so that doctors can administer the treatment to patients who qualify for it. Discuss
