Mayas May Have Made Mole-Like Dishes
Experts have long thought that cacao was mainly used by pre-Hispanic cultures in beverages, but the presence of chocolate residue on a 2,500-year-old plate rather than a cup suggests that it may have been used as a mole-like sauce or condiment by ancient inhabitants of the Yucatán Peninsula. Mole is a type of chili-and-chocolate-based sauce traditionally served in Mexico with meat or poultry. Its origin is disputed, but it is generally believed to have been invented in the early colonial period. This finding would suggest that mole may actually have its roots in pre-Hispanic Maya culture.
